For Ella Burkette, the only escape from an abusive marriage and the pain of losing her child, Daisy, is to take her own life. Because of a rare gene, she arrives at Haven, a world of immortals. When she meets Blake, she learns that love shouldn't hurt and her desires don't have to be denied.
Ella's and Blake's carefree existence is shattered when Ella discovers her daughter is alive and her ex-husband, Yorke, gave Daisy to a lawyer who specializes in illegal adoptions. Now, Yorke needs Daisy back to live, and Ella has to make damn sure he doesn't get her. But Haven has a sacred rule. Harm no human.
"How can you be ready to make love again?" Ella inhaled sharply as his tongue moved in slow circles around her earlobe.
"We didn't make love. I just fucked you up against the wall." He continued to tongue the edges of her ear.
Ella winced at his crude remark. "That's what I just said."
"No you didn't. You said we made love. That's not how I make love to a woman."
"What's the difference?"
"Let me show you." He led her to the end of the bed, her back against the high bedpost. "I like to take my time. No need to rush." His warm breath tickled her cheek as he spoke, his lips barely touching her skin.
Hypnotized by his voice, all she could do was nod, trying to swallow the huge lump in her throat. He captured her wrists, lifting her arms above her head. She instinctively clutched the bedpost and held on tight.
"The anticipation is almost as good as the climax." Blake tugged at the belt holding her robe closed. One finger traced a trail from her neck to her navel. "Almost."
